The effects of gum disease and dental clenching/grinding of teeth (Abfraction) can lower the gum line resulting in exposure of cervical dentine. Furthermore, dietary dental erosion can exacerbate the Tooth Surface Loss resulting in further thermal sensitivity. The increased thermal sensitivity is caused by the stimulation of the exposed dentine that communicates with the underlying nerve. Hot, cold & sometimes sweet foods can cause pain. The Deep Cervical Tooth Surface loss cavities can be restored with additive direct composites to protect the exposed dentine and prevent further Tooth Surface Loss. The shallow Cervical Tooth Surface Loss cavities can be protected with the application of 5% Sodium fluoride varnish.
